Essential oils, where do they come from?

Essential oils are basically plant extracts!

They're made by steaming or pressing various parts of a plant (flowers, bark, leaves or fruit) to capture the compounds that produce fragrance. It can take several pounds of a plant to produce a single bottle of essential oil. In addition to creating scent, essential oils perform other functions in plants, too

1. Calming agent

Many essential oils are used in aromatherapy to manage stress and anxiety. To boost mood, essential oils can be used during a bath or shower either by inhaling or applying oils direct to skin.

For example, scientists found that orange oil had an anxiety-reducing effect on male volunteers who inhaled 2.5, 5, or 10 drops.

2. Invest in sleep

Lavender oil’s relaxing fragrance is thought to improve sleep quality. Scientists tested this claim on older adults living with dementia. They found that sprinkling the essential oil on towels around their pillows significantly increased their sleep time, helping them slumber longer in the mornings.

3. Headache relief

A study by the Neurological Clinic of University of Kiel in Germany found that peppermint and eucalyptus oil mixtures increased cognitive performance and had a muscle-relaxing and mentally relaxing effect.
Another study by the University of Kiel found that 10% peppermint oil in ethanol solution efficiently alleviates tension-type headaches.

4. Skin saver

Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree is a natural remedy for acne and inflamed skin, hence the reason it is found in an abundance of cleaning and skincare products.

As well as improving dryness on the skin, tea tree oils are also perfect for relieving dryness on the scalp and is an ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners.

Along with its other improvement qualities, tea tree oil can also soothe skin irritations. It is also rumoured to reduce swelling and help the healing of wounds and grazes.
